Why is a Safe and Inclusive Environment Important to Assess to Lift?
Assess to Lift wants every student to feel comfortable with us regardless of their gender, race, culture, age, sexual preference, religious belief, or any other preconceived stereotype that may subject a person to unjust discrimination, harassment or abuse.
We want every student, staff member and visitor to feel included which is why we are so proud of the warm, welcoming and comfortable environment we have succeeded in creating and maintaining.
All students, staff and visitors are welcome. We ensure this by:
· Acknowledging the importance of identity
· Actively identifying and supporting students at risk of discrimination, harassment or abuse
· Actively preventing unconscious bias
· Actioning where necessary our zero-tolerance policy for any form of discrimination, harassment or abuse
Are there Certain Students that might need Additional Support to Feel Safe and Included?
Yes. We strive for every student to feel welcome however we also recognise that students from diverse backgrounds may require additional support to feel safe and included. This may include:
· Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
· Culturally diverse students
· Gender diverse students
· Students with a disability
· Students with low language, literacy, numeracy or digital skills
How can support needs be communicated with Assess to Lift?
Students can communicate their support needs by making comments when using the online booking system or by making comments as they complete the enrolment application form.
Alternatively, any student (or person with concerns for a particular student) can directly discuss support needs and arrangements with Assess to Lift staff. This can be done by contacting us via:

Phone calls, emails and messages will be responded to within a 24 hour period on a standard business day by the appropriate person.
Alternatively, an appointment can be made to visit the training centre by using any of the above communication methods.
When should support needs be communicated with Assess to Lift?
Anytime a student needs support, the support needs should be communicated to Assess to Lift as soon as possible. The student can contact us themselves or they may nominate a party to communicate this on their behalf.
Assess to Lift would prefer that this be communicated either before booking a course or before commencing a course so that support arrangements can be made ahead of time.
A student (or a person acting on their behalf) can however discuss support needs at any stage of a student's learning journey.
How does Assess to Lift Foster a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students?
Assess to Lift acknowledge the unique experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We recognise and acknowledge the history of First Nations people and we:
· Understand that education opportunities and experiences, employment opportunities and experiences, and access to support for First Nations people may not have
been the same as non-Indigenous Australians.
· Recognise the importance of cultural identity and provide a safe and comfortable learning environment where culture and identity are respected
· Provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with access to quality education and training, learner support and an overall positive learning experience
Assess to Lift also fosters inclusivity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by:
· Seeking to be known as a culturally safe, respectful and trusted organisation amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities
· Positive interactions with Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, staff and visitors
· Supporting true and sustained self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
· Including an acknowledgement to country on our website and in our site inductions
Any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student requiring additional support is encouraged to communicate their individual support needs with Assess to Lift.
How does Assess to Lift Foster a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment for Culturally Diverse Students?
Assess to Lift recognises that students may come from diverse cultural backgrounds. We understand that certain cultural or religious observances may require a student to be provided with additional support while undertaking a course with us.
Some of the ways we support our culturally diverse students include:
· Altering learning material for students with English as a second language
· Providing additional time for training and assessment activities where English is a second language
· Altering training and assessment schedules for periods of religious fasting
· Providing time for prayer, reflection, and/or meditation (during training phases of courses)
· Ensuring culturally appropriate foods (for events held by Assess to Lift)
Any student from a culturally diverse background requiring additional support is encouraged to communicate their individual support needs with Assess to Lift.
How does Assess to Lift Foster a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment for Gender Diverse Students?
Assess to Lift recognises and respects gender and sexual diversity.
Some of the ways we support our gender diverse students include:
· Acknowledging the importance of identity
· Having staff, fellow students and visitors refer to the student by their preferred names and pronouns
· Using the student’s preferred names and pronouns on class documents (where possible)
· Ensuring staff, fellow students and visitors respect a student’s gender and/or sexual identity
· Actively addressing unconscious bias
· Actioning where necessary our zero-tolerance policy for any form of discrimination, harassment or abuse
Any gender or sexually diverse student requiring additional support is encouraged to communicate their individual support needs with Assess to Lift.
How does Assess to Lift Foster a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment for Students with a Disability?
Assess to Lift does not look at a person’s disability, we look at their ability.
We understand that sometimes a student might need some adjustments to a learning program to allow the student to participate effectively because of an existing disability, illness or injury.
We understand that not all disabilities are visible and that a student may need adjustments because of a:
· Physical and/or chronic medical condition or injury
· Intellectual disability
· Mental health condition (e.g. anxiety)
· Neurodivergent disorder (e.g. ADHD, Autism)
Assess to Lift will make suitable arrangements to assist a student with a disability to participate effectively in their chosen course as long as they are capable of meeting course outcomes.
The support offered will be individualised to meet the student's needs but may include:
· Alterations to training and assessment schedules and/or methods
· Modifications to learning materials and methods
· Meet and greets before commencing a course
Any student with a disability requiring additional support is encouraged to communicate their individual support needs with Assess to Lift. We also encourage students with a disability to disclose this to us when they complete their enrolment application form. This information will be kept confidential and will be used to make sure that reasonable adjustments are made to support the student throughout their learning journey with us.
How does Assess to Lift Foster a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment for Students with Below Average Language, Literacy, Numeracy or Digital skills?
Assess to Lift recognises that some students may be capable of successfully completing a course with us but may need some additional assistance because of language, literacy, numeracy or digital skills.
The support that we offer will vary from person to person but may include:
· Verbal assessments
· One-on-one mentoring
· Modification of learning materials and/or methods
· Alterations to training and assessment schedules
· Assistance with undertaking digital activities (for example, completing the enrolment form or managing a digital High Risk Work Licence application)
Any student with low levels of language, literacy, numeracy or digital skills requiring additional support is encouraged to communicate their individual support needs with Assess to Lift.
